Spearfishing is not a mainstream sport like other types of fishing. So, there are very few resources available about it. If you are interested in spearfishing, then you should know some things about it before going into the water.
Know the regulations
You must check the local regulations of spearfishing. The regulations can vary from one region to the next. There may be restrictions on where you may dive to keep the swimmers safe. In many places, you need to get a fishing license.
Get the gear
You must have the right gear for spearfishing. You need a wetsuit, spear, dive knife, spear tip, stringer, gloves, fins, and snorkel. These are inexpensive and you can get them in the local fishing shops. You can also rent them.
Choose location
You must choose a good location for spearfishing. Some locations are deep down the sea and you may also go spearfishing in shallow water. If you are inexperienced, then it is better to start with the shallow water before going deep.
If you are a good diver then any destination will be suitable for you. Choose waters that are calm and have fewer obstacles.
Have someone with you
It is recommended that you go with someone. You need to stay under the water for a long time. Your body may get exhausted and you may need help. Also, you will be using dangerous weapons. So, it will be safe and relaxing if a friend goes with you.
Make yourself invisible
When you try to catch a fish underwater, hide behind water features so that the fish can’t see you and then approach it slowly without making them startle.
Improve your breath-holding capacity
Divers must know how to hold their breaths for up to three minutes. This may seem to be a long time. But once you start practicing you will notice that it’s not very difficult. You will be able to pick the right spot on the seafloor by holding your breath and hide behind a rock. So, when the fish appears you can approach it conveniently.
The diving and spearfishing skill will take time to develop. You must keep on practicing so that you get good at it. Always practice safety measures as this is a very dangerous sport.
